The tallest one is approx 7 inches in height, the shorter is 6.5 inch the diameter is 5 inch for both. I have a few other things I will post that you may like too :)

Nice WW1 trench art pieces. Based on the shine-- I would think these were UK examples. In the US, they are usually found with years of patina.
The tree design embellishment could have been done by your grandfather, another soldier, or even a civilian who was selling war souvenirs. Is there any family story on them?
They are German made shells and most likely from a 37mm cannon-- your diameter measurement looks to be off.
I am a trench art collector and have many examples posted on this site.

Odd that they appear to be the same caliper but the case lengths are diff.. Dia. given sure doesn't add up to being 37 m/m. Luv them still.
Yes I agree which is why I'm hoping to get some help with figuring it out, I re checked the diameter again and the mesure to approx 5"

5" is 127 m/m. Sure you aren't measuring circumference?
Something is off with your measurements.
If they have 5" diameters (measured across bottom through the center), then there is no way they are only 6.5" and 7" tall.

Do we ever get to know the measurement across the base of the projectiles? Gone this far!
they look like they have been recently polished? usually they have a dark patina, but they look nice like that too on the bookshelf.
