I believe that my 3rd great grandfather, Ichabod Sheldon, carried this old wooden canteen in the War of 1812. My grandfather, Calvin Burroughs, got it from his father, Cassius, and it was always said in the family that it was used during the War of 1812. (See photo of Cassius in Photographs and a letter he wrote to Calvin in 1911). Ichabod was Cassius’ maternal grandfather and 1850 Census records show that they both lived in southern IN. The name J SLEMMER is engraved on the canteen. I have a book about army and militia canteens that confirms that Jacob Slemmer was a Philadelphia cooper who made wood barrel canteens between 1791-1821. Photos in the book authenticate my canteen. I’ve been researching this canteen off and on for over five years! I guess my research finally paid off.

I LOVED this. Well, I should, my grandfather X 8 made it. Great comments Peggy, you do good work.
Bravo on your research on this canteen, and to your family of Patriots we salute you! A great piece, more enjoyable as you know it better.
Thank you very much, Flying Ace!
