Samuel F.B. Morse is well known as the inventor of the telegraph and the telegraphic "morse code".
In his younger days, Morse was a painter of some acclaim. Additionally, he learned the craft of photography from Daguerre and opened his NY studio in 1840 (one of the first in the US). The famous Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady was taught by Morse.
This particular image is a Sarony produced cdv that probably dates from about the time of his death in 1872 (or soon after).
Image depicts Morse with medals from various countries. The cdv is identified in pencil on the front and period ink on the back.
Thanks for looking vetraio and vo.

A great image ... one that is on my 'wanted' list.
What a magnificent image. Three Cheers!! My dad tried to teach me Morse code which he was proficient in, but I didn't grasp it. I think I was too little at the time.
Thanks rob.
I wanted one for a while too, but I waited on a bargain priced one.
Morse's contributions to American photography are often overlooked.
