I think this is pretty unusual!! It is hallmarked 9ct inside the finger ring.....I think the ladies would have felt pretty classy swanning around with one of these on their finger back in the day!
Was able to date the holder from this advertisement for one, in an Australian newspaper dated 25th October 1929. Also found a picture of Gloria Swanson actually using a similar holder which I was a bit excited about!
The internet is a wonderful thing for research!!
Cool - and great research!
Thanks racer4four! I really do enjoy the challenge of research.... I get lucky sometimes!!
Tassie! You're a gifted devil!!! Bravo !
Fantastic to have the advertisement for the piece, and Bette Davis pic using it :-)
I saw so much of them described as skirt lifters or hankerchief holders...
Some are actually for hankerchief, but these don't have the rounded end, intended to hold the cigarette without smashing it :-)
kyratango, thank you so much!! I actually tried it out at home with a cigarette a couple of years ago..... was not very comfortable to use....but I did feel a little bit flash haha!
I have seen skirt lifters, but don't think I have seen holders for hankies....will have to investigate..... thanks again

Just posted mine :-)
Thanks, yes I see the difference now!
Just looked at your cigarette holder....beautiful!
Thanks, I am having so much fun here on cw!
By the way I think it is not Bette .... even better imho it is Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.
Thanks vetraio5o, so it is......not really up on old movie stars....that's terrific!
Of course! Kevin, you're absolutely right, I must say I only looked at the smoking device :-)
It seems it was an option invention of Gloria Swanson herself.

Edith Head used it as one of the props in the movie.
Check out page 301 of the book above.
This is also a good read on this movie classic:
