My sister always had a collection of piggy banks she found at antique markets and charity shops over the years. When she passed away I kept this one, mainly because it is turquoise, which was her favourite colour (the pictures don't do the colour justice). I can't remember how long she had it as it is quite small and was tucked away behind the larger items. It is around 9cm long and 6 cm high and it looks like there is a signature (and perhaps a model number?) on the bottom. I have astruggled to find out anything about it online but would love to discover its history.
Made in Italy. 54/14/9 may be the a date: Sep. 14 1954. You're very unlikely to discover any history, as there is no manufacturer info on this savings bank.
Made from glazed terracotta.
Dear Efesgirl, this is brilliant, thank you. I would love to know what indicates its Italian origins?
It says "Italy" on the bottom.... :-))))) the word you think is a signature.....
At least, that is what I think it's supposed to be...I didn't find any images of this bank online.
Choice #2: it's not Italy, but the name of the person (as you thought) who made it and who will likely remain anonymous. This bank might have been a pottery project.
The only things for certain are that it's a terracotta piggy bank. The number could be a birth date, the date the bank was made or none of the above.
:-))))
I say it is made in Italy that is mark on it and number is either how many made or model number , Very Retro with the star design maybe 60's ?
Love your pig.
Looking at the number system on it it's possibly an early piece from Bitossi.
Whatever, it's wonderful!!
A big thank you for all these answers. It is funny, i always thought the text was a name, like P.Tay, but since Efesgirl suggested Italy, it seems clear to me that is what it says. Also a really interesting suggestion that it might be Bitossi - i have found similar writing on the base of Bitossi items online. Really appreciate all your input.
