This large Victorian vase is made from opaque custard coloured glass, which contains uranium & glows brightly under UV light. It measures 31.5 cm tall, 7 cm across the cut top rim, & 11.3 cm across the base. The vase features rather curious hand painted decoration of a disembodied hand holding aloft a bouquet of flowers. It was the decoration that attracted me to this vase. I collect hand vases, so the hand related imagery provides a nice adjunct to them, being also from the same era. The bouquet is painted quite proficiently, but the hand is somewhat awkward. I am also intrigued by the shadow under the lace edging of the bouquet - I can see that it is there to help show up the edge of the lace, but it also adds a pleasingly surreal touch.
    Bohemian origin.

I love this. How unusual to have the hand holding the flowers. Having been an art student I can tell you hands aren't easy to draw, looks like this artist was happier with the flowers, lol. A great addition to any Victorian glass collection.

Many thanks Vintagefran - & I know what you mean about the hands - I had my art school days as well, & it is my profession now. I agree, that the painter most likely specialised in flowers, as they are very nicely executed. Perhaps this was a one off or experimental piece? This type of opaqaue Victorian vase with painted flowers is ubiquitous, but the added hand makes it a bit different.
