Very interesting, even entertaining, article about the underground trash cans....I had never heard of those. CW is so educational! :^)

Thank you for those links to the underground trash bins....they do seem to be a nice idea until you consider the tripping hazards in pedestrian areas with many bars and the labor required to lift the can out. It’s good that they got rid of them.

Somehow I missed your most interesting diversion (?) in the comments here, keramikos -- you just caused a rusty gear in my brain to break loose for a second too. We might have had those receptacles here too -- several yrs now when I was looking at houses to buy, I came across one other here in my current neighborhood that had an unusual cast-iron lidlike thing out by its kitchen steps in the yard. It had the word MAJESTIC on its lid, at the time I guessed (without exploring further) that it was a leftover from some kind of 'incinerator', only because I recognized that name from one of those also once common but now nearly unknown 'household appliances', which came in the basement (connected to the chimney and city gas) of the house I grew up in. ALL SORTS OF COOL-BEANS FURTHER INFO keramikos, whether actually completely related to Ed's Nawlins utility covers or not...?! <cheers><applause><bows><smiles>
