    I am not sure if this is WWII or not. There is an insignia on his collar that looks like crossed cannon barrels with the number 301 over them.

      First World war, enlisted man. The jacket appears to be the model 1917 issue. I can't make out the collar disk from the photo, but what you describe would be the 301st Artillery Regiment.
