Bullet ashtrays are probably the most common of WW2 trench art.

This particular example has a unit identification as well as an engraved unit patch.

The ash tray is named to Captain Van Horn of the 2nd Armor Division. In addition to his name and patch the shell is ringed with his service: "Africa 42, Sicily 43. England 43, France 44, Belgium 44, Holland 44, Germany 45".

The center bullet is a US 50 cal round and the body of the ashtray is a hard to find German 88 gun shell dated 1943.

I have not researched CPT Van Horn.

    Thanks for looking.

Thanks again bones! The 2nd Armor Division patch and ID really sets this apart from the typical bullet ashtray.
