Machines of Loving Grace
Taking its name from a 1985 poem about the last Smith-Corona made in the United States, Alan Seaver’s handsome typewriter site is more than a mere history lesson in mechanical word processors. Seaver sees typewriters as a creative contributor to the medium of writing itself, forcing a writer to think before he thwacks. That said, there’s plenty of history here, from photos and descriptions of Remingtons, Adlers, and Royals to pdfs of typewriter manuals to special pages devoted to three-bank typewriters. There’s even a photo essay on staplers.
