Columbia Magic note record SAX label , was a division of EMI England, this is a very sought after recordlabel, with many great artists, like Leonid Kogan, David Oistakh etc. They are allways quite or very expensive to buy, it is the Rolls Royce among classical records.
The sound is better then the EMI ASD´s, and here the 1 edtion actually many times is better then 2 edtion in the sound.
They have the same feeling of workmansship and quality as do the EMI´s, these are very collectable records, and there are fewer available then most other labels, i try to get as many as i can afford for my collection, they are great value in any department.

    1 st record:
SAX 2261, 1 ed. Moussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition, Karajan & Berlin Philhamonic.
This is a great record in any respect, the sound is awesome, with ultimate clarity and dynamics, large headroom in the sound, and the performance of Karajan and the BPO, probaly the best record of this music in my opinion

    2 nd record:
SAX 2351, 2 ed. Brahms symphony no. 3, Otto Klemperer PO
very fluid performance, with warm inviting sound, that works perfect with the music of Brahms.

    3 rd Record:
SAX 2252, 2 ed. Beethoven symphony no. 5, Leopold Ludwig, PO, and Emil Gilels on piano.
Large scale performance, very dynamic, Brilliant pianoplay by Gilels, which comes trough with clarity and dynamics, which is very important when you listen to the piano, it´s an instrument with a wide scale of tones, on this record it has the right tone and scale

    4 th record:
SAX 2441, 2 ed. Gustav Mahler symphony no. 4, Otto Klemperer PO
this is one of my bestsounding records, their is nearly no surface-noise, the room stands clearly out in all its dimensions, the sound is utterly clear and dynamic, from minute sounds to the large crescendos that are the trademarks of a Mahler symphony, this is a record that i really enjoy when i play it, and the performance of Otto Klemperer is difficult to beat

Like a dissertation on fine wine, you make it sound sumptuous. I can imagine that you have a pretty sick sound system.

I just try to conway my listning experience to the readers.
And you are right, i have a quite " sick " soundsystem to play the records on.
being 2 x class A monoblock amplifierers, Garrard 301 recordplayer, custombuilt preamplifier and riaa, neutral & dynamic speakers.
Its getting tecnical, sorry i cant help it, there is not other way to explain.
you need a very good soundsystem and a maticules set-up ( the set-up is the most important point), to hear the best from vinylrecords, else you will not hear what great sound there is on them.
i hope all this makes sence :-)

All though I don't drink, I could listen to wine descriptions forever. Similarly, while you are way out of my league on the "system" it is a pleasure to hear your enthusiasm. Keep 'em coming. :)

Just wondering, Didn't he mean "slick" not "sick" ??
    5. ramma ramma, 14 years ago
i ment " sick " meaning over the top in a positive way :-)

I think it is worth noting that these British Columbias (SAX-xxxx) come in one of 3 incarnations... The first pressing label had silver lines on a pale turquoise background and was issued up until about catalog # 2540. The label of the next series had a red background with a black semi-circlar logo. A third label called the "magic note" was red with a small rectangle containing musical notes. These were reissues of previous labels.
