I bought this from a lovely lady in Bel Air.
It's history is just as beautiful as it is.
Her father found several of them in an old Pennsylvania church that was either closing or remodeling.
She said even though this one was not in good condition they could tell it was a beautiful piece of oak.
Her father gave the benches to family members. He later passed away in 2010 at the age of 86.
She tried to give this beautiful piece to family but all of them already had one or just did not have a room big enough.
It's gorgeous and I feel very blessed to have it =^)

Most old church pews from that area are in fact made from oak and very wide and thick slab oak. The kind you don't find much anymore. I don't know what pews are selling for but I know guys who would sell their mother to buy the wood. Very nice.

I searched online for about a week before buying this one. Others were much shorter and 5+x's the price. It really was a great deal and I'm very pleased with it.

It was common up in the northeast for churches to get new pews and sell the old pews to another church or a parishioner who happened to own a business. Unfortunately many of the really long old pews were cut down. I hate to admit it but I have cut a few down and re used the end caps to make a smaller deacons bench. I once watched an old world cabinet maker make one hell of a harvest table out of this type material. Three generations all seated at one table. Although some had to sit on wooden nail kegs and apple boxes. There never were enough chairs.

Awww that is a wonderful story thank you for sharing it. I would love to have a table like that to go along with the bench :-)
