Hello,
I was given this from a customer who was throwing it out. I would like to resstore it, however I can't find many images and I'm not exactly sure what it is? A furnace or a stove? Everything seems to be intact. I would like to restore it to origanal. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Andy
Based on the fittings I would say you probably have an old steam or hot water radiator. I never happened to see one like this and the thing might also have been for heating water, there appears to be ports for both an inlet and outlet. Can't see the fittings well but they appear to be brass.
It's a Gas Radiator with tubes of Russia iron. There is a Catalog #67 on Google Books for free see page 210: http://books.google.com/books?id=b6YJAAAAIAAJ&lpg=PA201&ots=-qxG_Tf1Ku&dq=detroit%20jewel%20water%20heater&pg=PA210#v=onepage&q&f=true

If you want to restore to working order, first remove the burner, wirebrush it and inspect it with a magnifier for cracks, find a rod of sometype and clean out all burner holes then blow out with an air hose. If the burner has one large hole per tube there are ceramic inserts you need to find to act as flame spreaders. Eastway Sales and Dearborn Heaters may be able to help ,you can find them on the internet. Your heater looks to be set up for natural gas, but that can be changed to propane with a different valve and oriface, again the sites mentioned carry those parts. The rest of the heater is cosmetic, clean off the rust, use a high temp paint, the blue jewels glow with the flame. Some people use their heaters as decorator pieces and put lights where the burner was.
P.S. go on Google, type in antique gas heaters, then images .
