Just wondering if I can dig up a little info on this trunk. I can't find any thing about the manufacturer. I'd also like to have an approximate date on when it was made if there's any way of telling that from the pictures. The man that I bought it from said it was probably from mid to late 1800's and I was wondering if that is an accurate time frame. Has original lithograph and is wood with metal over it. Thanks!

From the picture it appears as if this trunk is from about the 1880's - 1890's (locks, latches and construction). This trunk would look really great refinished, if you have the patience for that kind of project. Great to have a maker's label -- very rare to see them. Many trunk companies were small and went in and out of business quickly, making common styles using ordered parts from other hardware companies. There may be a business directory in the library or city hall of the town mentioned on the label, that may be of help. Welcome to CW and hello to a fellow trunklover!

Great trunk. I agree with trunkman. This trunk would look great restored. It has some interesting metalwork on the outside.

I see that the inside is water damaged but i think it reasonable to try to salvage the lithograph. If I were to tackle this job I would first cut closely around the lithograph. Next, apply damp cloth to the portions of paper around the print. Probably many applications of plain water or maybe some of a dilute solution of water and ammonia. Then, when ready, scrape off the damaged paper. When completely dry, and the rest of the wood sanded and ready, apply tongue oil followed by the finisher of you choice. The picture will darken only slightly. Not sure what the outcome will be of the water staining. I wonder how others would treat this problem.? All in all it will be fun, I am sure.

Also, I bet the small print on the bottom of the lock plate says, Eagle Lock Co. Terryville Conn. USA. Am I right?

I don't see any small print on the bottom of the lock plate. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

I have a very similar trunk (without the label) with identical looking lock, drawbolts, slats, shape and amount of metal relative to the box, which is tin covered. The small print, if it is there, may be filled with paint, at the bottom of the plate with the key hole in it.

Do you have a page with a pic so I can see where you are talking about?
