Early images of African Americans are very collectible and desirable.

This is a Quarter plate tintype that has had one edge trimmed a little making it slightly more narrow than a standard quarter plate. At one point, the image appears to have been cased as there is a matting line visible on the image and there are color variations that also show the mat outline.

I would date this imge from the late Civil War era to about 1875. The casing of images fell out of favor in the early 1870s.

The tinting on the image is spectacular-- yellow and blue to the clothing, gold to jewelry, and the red for cheeks and lips of both mom and child.

Reproduction of these images in any form is prohibited.

      Hi Scott,
What nice photo & piece of history. I imagine there aren't too many African American photos like this about. Very interesting.

Thanks fran. There are significantly fewer African American images available to collectors. Most likely attributable to population differences and economics.

The tinting on this particular image really makes it stand out from most that I have seen.

No idea at all, unfortunately! She did have some money as the jewelry and quality photo shows.

Thanks for looking antique&collect-- I was really fortunate to get this one. Both the content and high quality tinting are unusual.
