Pretty tragic image that shows something you rarely see in this early photography.
Image is an 1890s cabinet card out of Tipton, Iowa.
The boy is braced from foot to neck. I would think that it was the result of some sort of accident and that the braces are in the hopes that he will fully recover.

Thanks amber-- give me a heads up once you post the WW1 photos on here.

Oh poor baby! Wish we could know what happened. Sweet thing.
Will do!
I wish that there was a name or information about this boy on the back of the card, but there is nothing. So we are left to speculate.

Hi Scott . It looks as though it might have been early treatment for polio . The thought being keeping them rigid they would not get and deformity. He does not look like he is a quadriplegic . He would have had a trach at one time and none present . Polio did leave some people completely paralyzed and also they get quite severe muscle spasms which could be violent and strapping him could keep him from jerking uncontrolled and fall out of chair . As a RN I am just surmising this is his situation .
Thanks so much manikin-- that diagnosis would make complete sense!
I appreciate your help on this one.
