This was a case of a deal too good to pass up. I saw this in an auction flyer. It didn't have rails, but the bed was well over 54" wide, so it was desirable in that it could fit a standard full size mattress. Many early beds are too narrow and will require a 3/4 or special made mattress-- something to KNOW if you are in the market for an antique bed!
I left a very low bid and the auctioneer promised to deliver it to my area for $20.
I ended up the high bidder at about $100.
I paid about $200 for the wood rails and refinish job. The guy who did the work for me wanted to buy it!
The bed ended up in my oldest daughters room. She is away in college, so I was able to take a few shots. Before this bed, I only had cannon ball post beds-- it was nice to get something different.
While I purchased this about 15 years ago, bargains still abound in the antique furniture market.

Thanks aim-- they are hand carved. When I look closely I can easily see variants in leafs and on the posts.
Kind of like on a cannon ball bed-- usually if you hold the posts in your hands you will detect a difference in size that may not be readily visible. This is another indicator of hand carving.

Nice looking bed. I like the pineapples better than those darn cannon balls. Although turning a cannon ball is quicker and easier.
Thanks fhrjr2. I debated over a refinish on it, but the old finish was really bad and I knew my wife wouldn't want it in the house.
The pinapples certainly stand out a little more than the cannon ball posts.
The first antique bed that I ever bought was a cherry cannon ball rope bed, so I still like them alot.

Amazing condition for it's age!
Thanks david. It is hard to believe that it is approaching 200 years.
With the exception of the attachment for the modern built rails it has NO screws or nails in it. It is a great example of early wood joining.
