Kyle's earlier post of a beautifully enameled early Rubin Metall
http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/97878-loetz-rubin-matteiris-metall?in=user
sent me scrambling to find a piece that I have in my collection that 1) has the same decoration, 2) I have always suspected was early Loetz, and 3) is not found in any Loetz literature, anywhere, yet (shape or decor). This vase has a satin finish, and the color spreads gently from pink at the top, to a peach/orange color at the bottom. And it has Kyle's five-petaled blue and white flowers and vines with little dots of color in clusters... very much the same decoration. I believe Alisa has one like this in her collection, as well. When Alfredo posted his elephant the other day, I thought, "oh, I guess I only have one elephant in my collection (a little Moser one)", but in a different context, I realized that I actually several "elephants in the room" - namely, pieces like this one, and, as I will examine in part 2 of this article, the enameled pieces we have collectively come to know as "satin moriage" - pieces that are unmistakably Loetz, but are not covered in any of the currently published literature. We don't really talk about them, because the only proof we have is empirical. With Kyle's post, it seemed to me like a good time to bring these pieces back up for discussion?
Just so elegant....thank you for sharing...this must be rare....
Hi Warren
... Some discussion ... :-)
... that pink is troublesome ... as it is shared by so many early pieces ... think Alisa's carries a meaningful mark ... Have bought a few of these without any real satisfaction / clarification ...
Have a pair of elephant #2 with a floral Moriage (Coraline) design using the 3 colors of coralline used in the IV/104 (Alfredo's Pink Satin piece) ... And there are some matches to the pink casing in the PGM ....
Opens doors to a whole world of coralline as well ...???
Have no doubt about them being Loetz ... but putting a time reference on them is problematic ... starting to think in terms of legacy items from the designs of JLW ...
Do we know what Max Ritter von Spaun studied in Prague (? Metallurgy)... I think in terms metallic iridescence being his forte ...
While Proshaka and the Master Glass blowers and Decorators produced others ...
Technically these (the elephants) are all "simple" when compared to say an Octopus (1885) ... But still demanding ... In terms of effort ...
Not sure where you put the Satins with enamel artwork ....
... A whole can of elephants ...!
is it possible to link to Kyle's piece? I don't think I ever saw it?
on derp de derp. he deleted it. does anyone have the photo? I'd love to see it.
I don't remember who got one of these first, me or Warren but I do remember that it was in a few months of each other.. I haven't seen another since. Mine isn't meaningfully marked. it's just thru decoration and having that look to the glass of the satin moiriage. I have no proof, but I strongly think these are Loetz.
