Hello everyone! These matchbooks/ boxes are a few of my favorite gems for a few reasons. Well, let me pump the breaks and reverse really quick, it was not until 6 months ago that i got engaged to a collector and antique store owner that i was introduced to the antiquatarian and collectible world. Didnt really know much about collectibles, however being that one of his collections is of books (200,000 might i add! ) i was able to educate myself quite a bit. These are from Japan and belonged to my fiances uncle. He was a screenplay writer, most known for his work with writing the yakuza, Mishima, and other films. He lived in japan back and fourth and although his passing is unfortunate our collections passed on from him of items from a-z is has literally been a treasure chest and learning experience. This is the first time i have found this site, and what i REALLY love about it is that it defers the subject of value and promotion, sometimes i think that people loose sight in the hobby of collecting and just see $$$$ or there is no interest. I dont know much about the history of them but recognize some of the work to be of ukiyo-e artists: Utamaro & Shakaru ? Japanese woodblock prints are quite pricey so its cool to have some of it on something so small, that at the time was affordable maybe even free for people who could not purchase the woodblocks themselfs, as far as matchbook collecting i have to further educate myself actually, but who knows, maybe these can fetch a buck ;]
