These two side tables came from my Grandmother's home. They tilt back by pressing a release lever under the table top for easy storage. One has a scalloped edge while the other has a smooth beveled edge. They are both lovely and appear to be walnut and the smaller one perhaps cherry.
The smaller table belonged to my great grandmother. My grandmother (b. 1911) gave it to my mother before she died; mother remembers that it was painted pink when it sat in her grandmothers house at one time which that paint she removed. We always thought maybe someone made it at home as the initials "AG" are carved on the underside.
How do I determine the era/ age of these tables?
The manner of construction says these are reproductions from south east Asia. These are made to look old but the joints are much weaker than an original would have been. The tripod would have the legs attached with a dovetail joint, the top of the column would be the widest point and it would be joined with a square tenon.
I am skeptical that at least the smaller one was south east Asian as we know for certain that that one has been in our family for at least over 100 years plus. Thank you for your insight.
If you tip the table so you can see the bottom of the center column you should see one of two things. 1. You will see dovetail joints where the legs slide into the table column. 2. You will see a formed brass plate that covers the bottom of the column and also attaches to the legs and the joints don't show. The legs on your smaller table appear to be blind screwed and button plugged.
