I'm hoping to get a better idea of the year of the booth and phone. I installed the phone after removing a touch tone that was in it I believe to be from the 90's. Inside the booth on the upper left hand side is the Western Electric logo and stamped into the wood just under that is a possible date of 11-68. In my research, the glass booths came out to replace the wooden ones in the 50's, so I'm thrown off by the stamp because it doesn't make sense to me to be the manufacture year.
The only thing I can think of to identify the phone year is the pull out coin return and steel handset line that I believe came out in the latter years of it's manufacture, so perhaps '54 to '56? The one hint I may have is that inside the phone is a number of 01342. Perhaps this may tell the year it was made?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I absolutely adore my phone booth and think it is vital to keep such a wonderful piece of American history and its story around for generations to come.
The Bell Logo on your phone booth was used from 1964 to 1969, the booth with 11/68 would be right. The payphone you have was manufactured between 1964 to 1979.
Beautiful booth you've got there! Hoping to find one myself someday.
I have a similar phone booth (type 5?) that came with the house I bought. Can someone explain the door mechanism that trips the light? It's always been persnickety. One would have to move the door back and forth until a 'click' and the light would turn on. Now the light refuses to turn on. I don't here that 'click' anyone. And yes, I confirmed the bulb still works. Thanks.
