VERY RARE 19th century Austria-Hungarian 800 Silver & Stag-horn Figural Cigar Cutter of a Hound dog.
This is TRULY a rare find. We've researched many of the high end Antique Cigar Cutters on the Internet and as magnificent as many of them are, we honestly couldn't find one that quite measures up to this particular one.
The silver work on this cutter is exemplary, the finest we've encountered so far. It bears a 19th century Austro-Hungarian hallmark of a "Dog's Head" and the number "3", which indicates a Silver purity of 800/1000. There are Assayer's stamps of an "A" on the right side Silver oak leaf that indicates the city origin of Vienna.
An additional hallmark is also stamped on the leaf that looks something like possibly a figure or 2, or initials are within a rectangle (possibly the Maker's mark) that remains unidentifiable for now.
The Stag horn antler handle is fashioned from the less common "root" end of the horn bearing strong, brutalist-like manifestations on the horn surface~ likely from a a very mature Buck.
This AMAZING & RARE example measures 5.75" long.
We just acquired this from an old Escondido estate of an elderly Mingei Museum member here in San Diego, who's husband was from a wealthy Austro-Hungarian family. He served both with the French Foreign Legion before WWII and the OSS during the war....the home literally PACKED full of GENRATIONS of Treasures...
OLD Chinese, Japanese, European, and American art and objects, to fantastic Jewelry pieces and Heirloom mementos, this treasure has been safely stored away for decades in a smoke-free home.
Just fabulous!
