This is so cute but I do think the woman should be beating the man over the head! I've been told this was a TOY? Odd to think of something so heavy as a toy. People would call us bad parents if we gave these items to our children in this day and time. Is this in-fact a toy? What year do you think this is from?

IMO 1970's ,judging from the hand painted people and the texture of the cast iron. Are there any fasteners,i.e. screws , rivets ,or even welds on it?

The design looks like a gong bell toy but I think they used brass bells. If it is cast iron I like it.

Agree with gargoyle, a modern repro.

I also agree a modern reproduction.

I'll look for screws and rivets when I get home tonight. Yes, it is cast iron but if it's a reproduction I guess I don't like it at much as I did. ha.. Thanks everyone.

Just because it's a repro, doesn't mean you can't love it!Keep it and enjoy it!

I understand the frustration if you bought it as an antique, but have to agree with gargoyle again-- it was probably the appearance that drew you to it. Enjoy it!

I'm in agreement also as repoduction, The styling of the characters are those of the early puppets from "Street" theaters in the late 1700's and 1800's in Europe. beating one or the other with a stick always seem to make for a chuckle in the crowd. Enjoy this piece and thanks for sharing with us. I love it.

I haven't checked it out anymore but you're right... I should just enjoy it. But I REALLY wanted it to be an antique and was under the impression is was when I purchased it. Thankful I got an excellent deal.

That's good ,some dealers sell these types of pieces as antique's because they don't know any better and others are looking for a buyer who doesn't.
If you come across another piece, something to keep in mind is, real cast iron toys are smooth cast ,the seems between halves are usually very tight, and NONE were screwed or welded together, they were riveted. And many were not so detailed when they were painted.
