I bought this Mantel clock at an auction and don't know anything about it. Would you be able to tell me what year it was made and the current value? The clock is 13.5 inches wide by 9 inches tall. The key is stamped #9 and reads " Made in England Popular Progress". The clock has no markings except on the inside, on the back of the brass plate, it reads "Made in Germany". The clock case is wooden and stained a dark brown. It has 3 key holes on the front and a small door underneath the base for access to the clocks inner movements.

The key might have when to another device being that it was marked England. The clock should have a maker's mark on the inside components. Take it to a clock repair shop, they will give you all the details about it. It is beautiful!

What , if it is writing, is at the 3 o'clock on the dial, to small to make out in photo, but appears to be writing of some sort there.

The 3 O'Clock marks are for the chimes and are marked Chimes & Silent with a switch to lock down the chimes if desired.

      Welcome to CW.
Looks like the clock mechanism may have been replaced. The clock repair shop would know for sure.

      Very nice looking clock

It's a case style generally known as a "Tambour". Anywhere from about the 50s on American clock manufacturers who were still in business were importing and casing movements from Germany. Without anything more to go on I would *guess* that your clock is from circa 1960 give or take 10 years. Although I can see from your photos, I'm assuming that the clock is regulated with the rating nut at the bottom of the pendulum weight. Does the clock keep time, chime on each quarter hour and correctly strike the hour?

      Bruce99,
The clock does keep time pretty well. It will start to lose a few minutes on day 2 and 3 if not kept fully wound. The mainspring was replaced a few months back because it was broken when I got the clock at the auction. All of the chimes, both quarterly and hourly work well.
