This a painting that I found at Last Chance a while back. It was just laying up against an old couch out in the open area where I find all my chairs. I saw the simple gold leaf frame first and decided to look at what was in it. Even though this kind of abstract is not always my syle, I could just tell by the hand stretched canvas that it was an original. There is no shortage of original (not very good) art pieces at this placebut I look at them all anyway cause you just never know. I dont know if its my fine arts training that told me that this was not an amateur work and I should save it from the dumpster it would end up in. Turns out it is by a local artist here in the Carmel/Monterey area who died in the 60's and had been the head of the Carmel art association for a bit. I went there and bought a catalog from a retrospective of his work that was held in '04. His daughter is a working painter in Big Sur and he has a nephew whom he never met that writes a blog about Richard and his life and work. A couple of museums have his work such as the DeYoung in SF. Art, if at first glance you dont really love it, can grow on you the more you learn about the subject and / or the artist. Someday I will attempt to contact Mr. Loftons family and see what the have to say about this find of mine.
Very strong image! Love it!
