I volunteer at the Nantucket whaling museum and recently scanned this glass plate negative of Mr. Swain in an atypical uniform. The image was likely created in the late 1880s to early 1890s. The hat has a plume feather. There is a hook and sword symbol on the uniform hat and collar. There is a crown on the sleeves. There are four ornate engraved brass pieces. The sword appears highly ornate as well.
There are several refernces to these on Cw, a lot of material from different posters, It's a Odd Fellow
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows began in 18th Century England, it was deemed odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need without recognition and pursuing projects for the benefits of all mankind.
Began in North America, with the United States and Canada in 1819, and is continually expanding throughout the World where we are a worldwide fraternity in 26 countries. The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs are striving to make the world a better place in which to live, seeking To Improve and Elevate the Character of Mankind.
Wow thank you. Sure enough it looks like you are right the crown and the hook and sword symbol likely belong to the Odd Fellows. Nantucket had quite a few members. I don't suppose you could tell me the "rank" of this uniform or any more about the hat, sword, or metal engravings?
With a hair style like that, he should have posed with the hat on! Truly an "Odd" Fellow. Kerry, hope that's not a requirement for membership?
