This Hakata Doll is "Kokaji" in the motif of Kabuki performance of same title.
The story of the "Kokaji" goes like this . A Legendary swordmaker "Sanjo no Kokaji Munechika" got an order for his sword by then Tenno, or Emperor of Japan who had a omen in his dream to order it to Sanjo, but Sanjo tried to decline it due to lack of skillful assistant though he had no choise but accept the order. Praying at a shirine for help, a boy appeared in front of him and gave him words of encouragement and promised him that he would be an assistant.
When Sanjo came back to his workshop, the spirit who Sanjo met at the shrine in a boy form appeared again but in a form of adult man and assisted Sanjo for his forging work till its completion. The spirit flied away on a piece of cloud back to mountains after Sanjo offered the completed sword to Tenno`s messenger
