I would like to know who he is? How old and if anyone can help me identify him? He has been with a family for 5 generations..Hair looks human? Has moth holes in some clothes areas,About 10" tall-Arms & legs move-Appear to be metal?? He has a stuffed upper torso, feels like sawdust or similar-Feet are painted like boots and porcelain to the ankle-Metal under porcelain? I cannot find any markings on him at all..He is Very detailed-Even his mustache appears to be human hair?? Please help!

He has some of the characteristics of a Bucherer Swiss Oily Bisque Doll . He is dressed in a European Military suit . He was made as a novelty doll and could be used as a doll house doll. I would date him early 1900's not civil war era . He should have a mark just under collar in back of neck . It will help to give him a positive ID . There were so many German, and French dolls makers we need a mark or symbol . His country of origin should be on him also look just under hairline for mark . I tagged this for when you reply I am sorry I forgot him :-)

The marking would be on head not body . Is the collar glued to him ?

When we come across one we can not see the mark which has to be there it is under wig and we gently pull up on it . ONLY if it is completley needed . I would say we would lidt him as a novelty bisque doll . He is wonderful and we don't risk ruing clothes to see name . The name of maker is always not that important . He dates 1890-1920 . His value because of metal hands would increase him as they are not as commom. Bucherer did metal dolls but their hands were usually composition . His value would not change by maker's name .

Here is one similar although your's is much nicer , but just to get a idea of type of doll . Your's is either German or French

I think you did fine on price as he is not common to find . If he was just plain without metal parts and hair like one I showed you then it would be top dollar but your's is much harder to find because of body so no you did not over pay . I love him !
