TRADE DOLLARS (1873-1885) - This coin was issued for circulation in Asia to compete with dollar-sized coins of other countries. They were legal tender in the United States but when silver prices declined Congress repealed the provision and authorized the Treasury to limit coinage to export demand. The coin is 90% (.900) silver and contains exactly .7874 oz. pure silver. The coins were minted in the U.S. at the Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco mints. It appears you have a Philadelphia mint piece due to lack of a mintmark above the "D" in dollar on the reverse. This coin had a total mintage of 455,000 pieces of which 1,150 were proof strikes. Value would be based on graded condition but far exceeds the silver content value.
This coin was issued for circulation in the orient to compete with the Mexican peso. It is 420 grains in weight compared o 412 1/2 grains which is the standard weight of the regular silver Dollars. They were issued from 1873 and the law authorizing Trade Dollars was repealed in February, 1887. Three varieties were issued in 1876 and the 1876s was the most issued at 5,227,000 issued. The 1876cc was issued at 509,000 copies and the 1876 was issued at 456,000. RER(BOB)
