Hello, I inerited this beautiful piece. I know nothing other than apparently it is 9 or 10kt gold. It is about 1 1/4 inches long and over 1/2 inch high.
Beautiful detail on the front. Any information would be appreciated. Is it antique? No markings I see on it.

This is for a Victorian Lorengette chain....it makes the long chain have a V in the middle...and you clip it to the dress. So you can hang glasses or keys off the chain...very nice!

Hmmm. How do you tell it is gold if it isn't marked? That may sound like a dumb question but I just wonder if you have a means of knowing without taking it to be tested.

I took it to a jewelry place and that was their assessment but they didn't know anything else about it. It is beautiful and so much prettier than my photos showed.

I was wondering what the design on it meant (the openings and the little stick pin sticking out in the back. Does it open?

As Moonstone said, the pin is for attaching it to clothing, and the openings are for a chain that would slide through. The cameo could be depicting a historic or literary character but most likely just a generic beauty.
