Here is a nice old wooden box. Looks to be old and handmade. Perhaps someone who knows more about hardware could chime in....but the screw looks handmade to me. The nail heads may show something too. It is only about 12 inches, not a huge box. Thanks for looking!

Great looking piece. The screw does not look handmade to me -- and they may have been a later addition to the trunk. If it is hand made often the center slot is somewhat offset but the three you have there look pretty much centered. The nails do not look so uniform but they do not appear to be the hand made rose-head type. It has that Victorian era black paint on it -- so it could fall within the 1850 to 1901 time frame. It is an unusual document box-- I would be glad to hear other opinions.

oh great, trunkman I was hoping you would chime in. Thanks for the info. I was thinking about 1900, but I was also convinced the screws were handmade. Of course, I am not very experienced in old hardware. But I am grateful for your analysis. Have a great day!!!

      Thanks Sean!!!!!

I love that someone took the time to place the decorative scrolling on it.
