We had returned from a 3 wk trip across the outback in Australia a little over a week before this news became a riveting scandal down under. We knew something was going on when we were at Ayer's Rock [Uluhuru], but we didn't know what until the police interviewed us when we got to Sydney. Even then, they didn't tell us anything, but soon this story broke. I was with a group of exchange students and we camped at the rock for two nights - Aug 16th and 17th, 1980. Some people i was with had seen the Chamberlain family, but i didn't notice them. I had taken a number of photos of dingoes around the rock, and i had to give those photos to the police. They were sent back to me 2-3 yrs later and i still have them somewhere. I have some other memorabilia from Ayer's Rock - like a certificate that says i climbed up the rock on August 17th - the day the girl went missing. Eventually, the whole story was made into a movie, but i don't think i even saw it [I don't see many movies]. I think i'd like to see it now though.
Wow... That's amazing. I remember this story. I think they made a movie too.
That made for a memorable exchange trip!
I remember the story as well.
thanks drfluffy and walksoftly. i looked it up and they made two movies about it - one w/ meryl streep as the mother. i haven't seen either one yet, but plan on seeing the meryl streep one soon.
Yes... I saw the Meryl Streep one and it was heart breaking.
