This chair was purchased from an estate sale in northern NJ many years ago, most likely the Lyle Estate in Tenafly. There is a "Yale University" brass plaque attached which makes it a very interesting item. I just have no idea of the history or value of this chair. Can anyone help??

The only name I ever heard this type chair referred to as was a library chair. Classroom chairs had only one writing surface and were made both left and right handed. Library chairs had two surfaces, one for a research book and the other to write notes on.

Whether it is original or not probably doesn't say much for it in terms of value. It was an inexpensive chair when it was made and it is in bad shape. The seat is commonly called a cheek pincher for obvious reasons. You can find these selling online for $25 on up. I know you are going to say but what about the Yale plaque. Depends who the buyer is whether that makes a difference and even then with the cost of repair is it worth it. This chair pre dates Stephens who designed chairs for Yale. I can't recall his first name and didn't like his style so it doesn't matter. As I recall he was the top dog starting in the 1960's. I'm not sure if Yale has a public archive but I think if you emailed the right department they could help. They have a branding department that would be able to identify the plaque.
