This is a cool piece! Dated October 28th, 1862, the person is claiming exemption from service. The original claim was for "St. Anthony's Dance". Anthony was crossed out and Vitus' was inserted. According to Medical Lexicon, these were both obsolete eponyms for Sydenham chorea. Another interesting item is the Justice Of The Peace. Shown as Tiffany Lawyer, this seems a very early date for a female J.o.t.P., but there are several other documents signed by her. Just cool and interesting!

Neat item. I wouldn't assume that "Tiffany" is a female. Today it is used for females.

Much more likely that Tiffany was a family name (last name) that was used as a first name for a male child. Some research on the county will probably reveal a Tiffany family in the same area.

Thanks, Sean. And very true, scott, we do have some Tiffanys in the area. Thanks all for the loves!

Spot in, scott! I got this from a local historian: Tiffany Lawyer was male. I think he was named from the marriage of Thomas Lawyer to a sister of George Tiffany. Thanks!

No problem ny-- glad to help.

Applying modern standards to earlier times will often steer you in the wrong direction. I have done it before!
