What is this? It is terracotta. 6" diameter and 5 3/4" tall. As pictured it is has a spiral on the inside. I found it under a concrete pad. Someone in the industry thought it was from the 1880's - that is a guess.

It was made in Kushequa, PA by Pearl Clay Products Company. It was used in WWI to make bombs - mixing mustard gas. The would stack on end and the spirals helped to mix the components and the clay was not effected by the acid. Other thoughts?

Wow! what a history. Did you know that the U.S. was the only country that took banned chemical weapons "into a war zone"? Happened in Italy where the freighter was bombed by the Germans & a lot of Italians & Brits died because the U.S. refused to admit it or tell what the agent was! Makes one wonder who the "terrorists" are? I'm sure I'll get response on this but ck the records before replying.

I guess the key word is banned - Germans were the first to use it in WWI
