I know this doll is very old, but my father did not leave any history about it. Her clothing is in very good condition... Any ideas?

Hi your doll is very nice . She is a early paper mache head . Dates about 1850's to very early 60's . These heads were often on wood bodies and called Millner's Models. I can not tell if you doll is on a handmade body which was common sometimes just head was ordered and the mom made body . How tall is she . I need to see the side profile of her hair do . It helps us ID them by hair do also . She has a good value . I will await more info on her and hope another photo of side veiw and part of her body . beautiful old doll

Your doll is earlier than I stated possibly now I see her hair better . She is some times referred to as a tuck Comb .(Dolls are often named after hair do ) She dates 1820-40's . As I said earlier these heads were often on a wood body and called Millner's Models/ Your's being on a cloth body decreses her value a bit from a wooden body . She is Made in Germany . Also called a " Apollo top knot paper mache doll". She is a sought after doll among antique collectors .

Milliner’s Models or Varnished Heads were toys but also have been called early mannequins . Originating in the small, mountain villages of Germany’s Thuringian Forest in the early 19th century, the dolls that are today highly collectible were made prolifically until the 1850s.
The dolls are composed of papier-mache busts and kid leather bodies filled with sawdust with arms and legs carved from wood.
The name, Varnished Head, comes from the application of varnish on the dolls’ papier-mache heads. The Germans who created the dolls had previously invented this strong and clear varnish to seal boxes. They found that the varnish also worked well on the papier-mache and allowed for the protection of the painted faces and painted and formed hairstyles.
True to the times in which they were created, the dolls’ hairstyles and clothing capture the fashions of the period.

You have a very interesting doll with a lot of history . Not all old dolls have the history your doll has . It has been my delight to see such a important doll come through CW site . There is so much more on her . But again because of your heading don't be taken and if she made it this far in your family I hope she will be kept in your family and cherished . Someone loved her enough to save her to pass on :-)
