PICKED THIS CABINET UP TODAY. I THINK IT IS FOR MAPS AND CHARTS, IN OVERALL GOOD CONDITION. NEEDS A LITTLE CLEANING AND A FEW JOINTS TIGHTENED. I THINK IT WAS FOR MAPS AND OR CHARTS. ALL THE BRASS IS INTACT. DON'T KNOW FOR SURE JUST LIKED IT WHEN I SAW IT. NO IDEA AS TO AGE. NO MAKERS MARKS.
I love this... I have been looking for a long time to keep my vintage jewelry.
Looks like a machinist chest to me. Maybe for micrometers etc.. Lot diff. than a tool box.
I SEEM TO REMEMBER SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN OUR SCHOOL ART ROOM WHERE THE CHALKS AND PENCILS WERE KEPT. THE MORE I LOOK AT IT THE MORE I LIKE IT. THANKS FOR THE INPUT DrFluffy and blunderbuss IT IS APPRECIATED.
Looks like a spool cabinet to me.

It is very beautiful and could be used for many different tools and/or spools =^) Enjoy it in good health Cad1949.
I'd put rock posters in it. ;-)
Here is an example of a "Merrick's spool cabinet":

Mine has similar drawers but with wood pulls. Much of the label on mine is gone.

Looks like scott has pegged it.
I just saw one of these yesterday at the Brass Armadillo Antique mall. It is being sold as a Merrick's spool cabinet. I don't remember the price but I think in the $500.00 range? It did not have the drawers labeled like the one Scott posted.
The label/ advertising would have to be intact and overall condition excellent in order to approach that kind of money (assuming it is about the size of this one).
