I found this beauty covered in rust in a barn. The only money I spent restoring it was for new tires, paint and a chain. All bearings were in perfect condition and just needed a thorough cleaning. The complete rebuild took approximately 22 hours over 10 days. One of the funnest projects I have done. I am in process of creating decals to match the originals since they are no longer available.
Incredible job, looks great. I have an old muscle bike that looks like your before pic. Gotta ask your advise, what did you use to take off that much rust?
The best method I have found for removing rust from chrome or bare brushed metal is a brass wire brush. The brass is softer than chrome so it doesn't scratch. I use a high quality 150 grit sanding disc for painted surfaces and a good primer.
