I obtained this Camel back trunk from a friend when she moved out of her family home. Her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother had all lived in this house and no one had ever really cleaned out the attic and basement. There were many nice items, but this was my favorite. These pictures do not do justice to the beautiful interior. When I opened the trunk for the first time I found a ladies lace hankie, a small book titled "The Floral Gift from Nature and the Heart" with an 1850 print date, and several ladies hat pins. The book has a very faint inscription which is mostly illegible, except a clear first line, "I love You . . ."
The trunk itself has a very plain exterior which I will probably paint, but I intend to keep the interior as it is.
I have never seen another trunk with this nice of an interior. Does anyone out there know more about trunks like this?
I also have never seen such a lovely and well preserved interior. The large compartment is a hat box, the long one is for the parasol and the one in the lid may be a document box or perhaps for some unmentionable ladies' thing. There may also be a glove compartment that I cannot see. I would love to see the exterior. Can you post more pics?

Great to see such a nicely preserved interior. My Martin Maier Trunk unfortunately does not have the interior that yours has -- so it is great to be able to see what kind of work he did on his trunks. Really nice piece -- thanks for the post. Also fabulous to see an original label...
Does anyone know if there are any trunks being displayed in museums? I am fascinated by the history of these lovely items, but they seem to be the forgotten step-child of other furniture of the same era.
There is a display at the Ellis Island Museum depicting the docks as the immigrants came to America. I loved to see the long row and variety of trunks "thrown" onto the land where the ships were being unloaded. The story of what happened next was..........interesting and heart wrenching.
This is beautiful! I have never seen a trunk that looked this good on the inside either. What a great find!
