I found this piece at an estate sale & couldn't resist. It has great detail to it but I haven't been able to find any info as to the age & I'm super curious. It is very heavy and has a patent date that is shown in the 4th picture. Would love to have any info available & I think this is going on the wall in my husband's shop if we can find a bare spot that big.
These were made so that the "new" steel drums could still be handled, and fit in the same spot as the old wood barrels did(same shape),but during WWII they went back to making and using wood barrels(metal rations),many old timer barrel makers were re-instated to do this.
This one was patented in 1908,but this barrel shaped style was used into the late 20's maybe early 30's.
Thanks for posting! And welcome to the CW!
I have 3 ,but not Gulf's,they are really heavy,I plan on doing that to one of mine, because it's beat up on the sides
Thank you so much for the info on my "little" Gulf piece. My husband didn't know what I had brought home because I had it wrapped in a blanket that I carry "just in case" I run into a find. Anyway he will be pleased that I finally have an answer.
I will have to post mine,so you can see the whole thing.
i have a complete 55 gallon drum with this same thing/date on top...it also has an old hand pump from the same era...drum has always been inside a barn, has very little surface rust, and a coulpe dents...its the oldest 55 gallon drum ive ever seen, and is very unique {to me anyway}...i was wondering, is there a market for this type item, and if so who would i contact to deal with selling it ? or should i just ebay it ?...i am not trying to sell it here, just trying to see if there is a market, and how to go about it if there is one...i can post pics if needed...thank you for your time..
