I inherited this sterling (marked) item years ago in a box with a jumble of small items. It has never had an insert, to the best of my knowledge. The bottom is solid, but the sides have a cut out pattern. I wonder if it was a ladle to remove fruit from a punch drink. I have yet to find a use for this item, maybe I should just get rid of it.

bigtex....what is the size? I don't think it is a ladle, instead a soup bowl or an ice cream dish? To hold and eat at the same time at a party. I would not get rid of it, but I do have a soft spot for sterling. Nice one!!!

Couldv had a glass liner but i dont think so or could be something to do with a church ;-)

May be you should show the mark. Sometimes that helps to id your piece.
