This knife has been around for as long as I can remember. The blade is 7" long. The sheath is metal covered with what looks like a twine material, it has a leather belt strap. The knife handle is wood and metal. I can not find any markings on it. It's not in the best condition, as you can see.

Any idea how old it might be and what it might have been used for?

I found some markings on the metal part of the handle, don't know how I missed them before!

An oval with what looks like " IVU" in it with a curved line above the letters. Also, H 63 652 and some small letters after that, but I can only make out this much of them C. G_G_ _

Not 100% sure on this one, but try googleing a 1938 Mannlicher Carcano Bayonet and see if it is close.

If I had to guess this is a broken German bayonet turned into a knife. The push button is missing in the lug grove. I would think it was a WW I issue for a Mouser 98 because of the wooden handle and the ware off the blade. The metal sheath wrapped in the cord is makeshift the nob that sicks out of the side of the sheath is what held the sheath in place on leather frog that hung from the belt.

It does look very similar, but mine doesn't fold. I'll keep looking! Thanks! Maybe it is Italian, just not that model?

I think you're right, it's just the fixed blade model! Thanks so much!!!

James, take a look at the chamfer in the guard, sloping towards the blade, also the slight choil in the blade, looks Italian to me.

Thanks James, I just found a picture of one with the push button intact. To my knowledge this one hasn't had that in my 35 yrs of life. lol

I have never come across a Carcano bayonet. Other than JFK got shot with a Carcano rifle. I never much thought about it as a rifle or a bayonet used in WW II. I thought the ring for the barrel was a little to small. I just passed it off as the angle of the photo. Good call Dave.

I didn't know JFK was shot by a Carcano. I'm a chick, we typically don't care about details like that, but that sure is neat to know!

Twisted little pieces of history is why some of use like to collect guns, knives and all the other little play pretties that we adorn our man caves with.

Under the knife & sheath in the last 2 pictures is that a Black Walnut burl round table top? The first 2 look like Black Walnut too but not the same table.
    15. tikiray tikiray, 14 years ago
James, the first two pics were taken on my kitchen table, the other two were taken on an end table in my living room. I don't know anything about the end table. It was given to me by my best friend who moved to New Orleans this past summer. She bought her grandmas house and it was full of furniture, they had to get rid of it all in order to put their furniture in it. They were going to garage sale the table with the rest of the furniture until I said "I'll take it!". So I loaded it up and brought it home.

I am a survivalist I have made my own bows, arrows and napped my own flint arrow heads. I can start fires without matches or lighters. I have brain tanned hides and made my own clothes and boots. I have used snares and dead-falls to hunt. When the electric goes out I'll be one of the few with the a BBQ going.

That round table could also be Carpathian Walnut burl. It looks like a very nice table. You should take some pictures of it. Besides my man cave is a 30x40 basement. A hole in the ground............. that's what a cave is.

LOL the BBQ comment reminded me of when we had a bad hurricane back in 2005 and instead of all the meat in my dads deep freezer going bad he started BBQing it and the neighbors that were brave enough to stay through the storm and the emergency workers all came to eat until all the meat was gone. lol

I'll take some pics of the table tomorrow. It's not in perfect shape, but I like it nonetheless. Some of the varnish has chipped off. The bottom shelf of the table has caning in it.
