Just under 15" long and 5" wide @the handles, I was thrilled researching these, I state being assumptive: corrugated steel shears? The thrill of researching something...is to find out about the company, it's history, the items construction, it's use and even as fun - advertising which makes solid claims and sometimes the pride of it's creation is reflected. The only better thrill? Not finding a single solitary thing...and being a professional webbernet kind of guy ;~) And the only thing which can make that thrill even better? Finding the coolest site with the most wonderful "Integrity Ridden & Morally Bound" group of members and hosts! These, are 1 of over 250 items left to me by my best friend and hero...my father! He was the very definition of eclectic! Traveled widely, spoke 6 languages...and was the very definition of "good & kind"...to a fault! And, proud to be...he helped find the Atocha with Mel Fisher, debriefed Hitler's home office in Bremerhaven...and most likely most of the things left to me...he 'liberated' from scrap left by others...or carefully overpaid for something, happily, for the sellers unique charactor in holding something, he had not seen.
The date of patent...is not the date of manufacture...I think. Here's a link to the history of the company...and the family bought the company back after some dweebs bankrupted it - classic "Family is a hero" story! http://www.wisstool.com/about_us/index.cfm
I have been using Wiss aviation snips for 40 years in my trade as a roofer.
I too have several pair of Wiss snips.
I think the clue is LL Sagendorph. In 1886 he had several patents for corrugated roofing along with several tools associated with roofing. I did not find a description other than "shears" for pat # 355103 on Dec 23 1886.
My guess is shears for corrugated roofing.
