The images shown above are of an oil painting that I located in Bloomfield, NJ while browsing nearby in one of my favorite eateries Cuban Pete's.
The painting, containing a marvelous snow scene, is signed Nicholas 1948 (Kiental, ALP S W ).
It was brought to my attention that the artist Nicholas is none other than Henry H. Nicholas also known as Hobart Nichols, Jr. He was born 1869 in Washington, District of Columbia and died in 1962 in Bronxville, NY. He has affiliations with the Grand Central Art Galleries in NYC and the Panama Pacific Exhibition.
Nicholas has had exhibitions at the Art Instition of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery Washington, DC; and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
He used various medias such as gouache, oils and water. His many styles are impressionism before 1940, lumincas, luminism, realism, realists and naturalist to name a few. He lived and worked in California, Litehfield, Conn., New Mexico, Rockport, Mass. and Europe. His many subjects are coastal shorelines, figures, human activity, Indian figures, landscape, maritime, nautical, snow scenes, winterscapes, street scenes and town scenes to name a few.
