This was part of my mother's effects. I've got no idea what it is or why she would have it. Her family were tailors - so that might be a clue. The case is leather with a velvet lining and is 4" (10cm) long. The contents seem to be made of steel. The 'screw' at one end is 2" (5cm) long. The 'lug' on the bottom right of the picture does not move though this is not to say it should! There is a hole in each end but does not seem to go right through. Maybe if the 'lug' turned it could line up.
On the large 'lug' the letters F and X are inscribed on each end. This 'lug' does not appear to move as it is cast onto the shaft.
Neat item . It appears to be sterling silver to me . I have had a few antique sewing items made of sterling and were prized by owners . It does look like something for sewing but I have no idea ? A ribbon twister or threader ? What ever it is a very good piece .Hope someone can positive ID it .
