This appears to be hollowed out bamboo. The length of the body is covered in hieroglyphics. One side shows what looks like a calendar with 30 spaces down and 12 across, with 5 diagonal lines going across the whole. On the other side it shows a serpents head and a caricature of a human figure. There is also what appears to be compass points.
The top, which fits into the body with a cord and is crudely carved in a totem design.
The inside of the 'bamboo' has some worm.
Tourist item?
Bamboo is naturally hollow, each segment makes a nice container.

All of it. Why would somebody go to the trouble of carving all that cryptic stuff for something to sell for just a few $'s?
It might be some sort of calender. I had a little simpler one made in Indonesia.
