This was(another) one of those things that I ended up taking a chance on, as the seller had posted one real crappy picture, and was a pill to deal with.
Had to drive to the States to pick this up also, but buying a 30 pak of Canadian beer for half what it costs here, and filling up the tank with cheap gas, helps off-set the cost a bit!!
I was hoping this would respond a little better to my cleaning, but the alligatoring of the paint is there to stay. Still, all in all, not bad for almost 80 years old!
First pic is after clean/wax, second is before.
    Cheers!!

Great find ! How tall is it ? I love your reasoning in saving money to pick it up too . Is there a way to seal paint from alligatoring any more than it has . Would hate for chips to flake off . I love it ! :-)

Hi Mani, great to hear from you. The paint is stable, just that with the multi layer processes used back then, 80 years of sun, heat ect. the layers age at different rates causes this problem. I have done it on purpose to replicate age with pieces .
This will not flake off, as I cleaned it fairly well with a cotton make-up pad with a mild acid based boat hull cleaner, then applied a coat of wax, but it hardly changed the appearance.
Thermo is 17" long and approx.4" wide.
      Thanks for stopping by Mani.
      Cheers!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you dilute the mild acid based boat hull cleaner? Would you mind sharing the name of the type of acid and percent of the acid you used? I am always looking for new ways to clean painted signs. I have a friend who uses a mild mix of pool hydrochloric acid on porcelain signs but rinses it off with water almost immediately after using. This removes the rust and rust stains. Thanks

Hi CornerCollectibles, the stuff I use is Captain Phab low fuming Hull and bottom cleaner, applied un-diluted as it will not harm paint, and removes stains, rust, mineral deposits etc. Any boat shop carries something similar. Works great on porcelain, and tin signs, but did'nt fix this old pieces problems!

Thanks for responding and sharing the information. Yours is a great thermometer and actually in pretty good condition. Have you seen the matching 40" bottle sign? They look great together. Thanks again for sharing.

Home Run Bernie. That's my favorite thermometer and you got yourself a beauty. The Christmas Coke signs are fanstastic. Well done.

Hi blundebuss, in the States of course, waay cheaper for almost everything in the U.S.!

Bernie, the fact that you even found one in tact is amazing! None of these are pristine anyway so don't feel bad about the condition. Mine has little things that made me angry at first but now I know the possibility of even finding one in decent shape is rare. To me, it's the finest looking therm of the bunch of Coke therms and I own many. Well done my friend!!

OK, so we know you didn't dip into NY State for this little beauty. Cheap gas and beer isn't found here, lol.
    16. pickrknows pickrknows, 11 years ago
Hey Tommy, N.Y. state is practically giving the stuff away compared to here! 30 pak for $19, here 24 for $38, gas way cheaper too!
Let me in, I want a green card!
I would be able to afford to have a drinking problem if I lived in the States Tommy!,

Think of the screams if they taxed Pampers, Gerber's etc. like that. Probably be a revolt!
