Any information regarding this can would be appreciated. I think it may be a railroad can from England, but I am not sure. Also, what do the letters BR (M) mean? Approximate age?

Is there any coating or smell on the inside as to what might've been in it?

I know it has been a while since this was posted but here is some info - it is a British Rail oil can the (M) stands for Midlands as it was the train service for the midlands region of England ie Nottingham, Birmingham, Derby etc.

Date wise, it is between 1965 and 1994 as British Rail was then sold off. Given the type of equipment I would place it about 1965 to 1980.
