Glass boxes (or lidded pieces) were always sold to me as candy dishes (but the real candy is the colorful pieces themselves).
Were they purchased in gift shops and filled with candies or bonbons for Easter?... Maybe they were used at the table for jams, ginger, mustard or pickles?...or were they used for, anise lozenges, tobacco or snuff?
Maybe they were just given as gifts to be be displayed?
