This ginger jar is another item I inherited from my Mom who got it from her Mother. My Grandmother bought it while living in Panama. There is no marking on the bottom, but I seem to recall it is Japanese. I'm curious if someone can identify the material. I know it's not ivory, and assume it is a resin like Bakelite which was invented at the turn of the last century. I think this bought in the 20s or early 30s. I've looked at hundreds of ginger jars, but never seen one like this. If anyone can tell me more, I would appreciate it!Btw, the inside of the lid and inner lip seems to be brass and the inside of the jar seems to be tin or aluminum.
I just realized with some research it is Cinnabar.
Lol. Jim, you're amazing! Thanks so much. You obviously have a lot of experience with Asian art and collectibles. Can I ask you, is this a hobby or do you do this for a living? The reason I'm asking is that I've been to a few "sales" lately, just for fun/ There is something incredibly satisfying about finding as really good deal and making a profit on it. Kind of like opening a successful restaurant! I know, I know;everybody's "picking" now, but still....
Thanks again for your help!
